It’s been a while since I have written a blog.  I belong to a group called Author Ready, where New York Times best-sellingauthor, Richard Paul Evans, shares his knowledge and experience with new authors.  The session I listened to recentlywas about emotional triggers.  He mentioned that when you publish a non-fiction book, there will undoubtably be triggers when you speak to others about your story.  That reminded me of…..

November 2023, I was at a book signing and the foot traffic was a bit slow.  A woman finally approached my booth and picked up a copy of Healing Tears.  She turned to the back cover and stood there for several minutes as she read.  She laid the book on the table, looked up at me and said, “Yikes!”  Then she walked away.

My daughter and I looked at each other, puzzled, and I finally said, “Wow, yikes?”  As I sat at my booth, I realized that this woman could not verbalize her emotion other than the one word, and she did not want to engage with me.  No judgement.  I don’tknow her story, but…

Talk about a trigger for me!

When I decided to share my story, I knew that I was opening my personal life for not only support but for criticism as well.  The amount of encouragement and love I have received since Healing Tears was first published in 2017 has been incredible.   However, there have been a few instances where I was negatively criticized.  It is during those times that I find myself turning inward and reducing social media interaction or book signings. I focus time and energy on my family and close friends as I rebuild strength.

I decided to share this with you as a reminder that we all need kindness, support, and love.  While our initial reaction may be “yikes”, we should step back a second and try to reply with something positive.  Just a small acknowledgement goes a long way.  I hope we can all keep this in mind when we are presented with an opportunity to lift someone’s spirit or show kindness.

– That must have been very difficult for you.

– I admire your courage.

– Thank you for sharing your story.

– Give someone a much-needed hug.

May your day be filled with love and laughter!
